Coastal Matipo
Myrsine aquilonia, commonly known as Poor Knights matipo, is a coastal shrub or small tree native to northern New Zealand, especially the Poor Knights Islands. It grows up to 12 metres tall and features small, heart-shaped leaves and smooth, ringed trunks. Tiny green to pink flowers appear in spring, followed by purple fruits that attract native birds. This dioecious species prefers well-drained soils in sheltered, coastal environments and is ideal for native revegetation or as a hardy, bird-friendly feature in Northland gardens.
