Growing Myoporum laetum Trees Successfully in NZ

Myoporum laetum, commonly known as Ngaio, thrives well throughout New Zealand and is particularly well-suited to coastal and windy areas. It thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils, including those that are poor or sandy, as long as they are free-draining. Ngaio is fast-growing, drought-tolerant once established, and provides excellent shelter or screening. Plant in a sunny spot, water during dry periods in the first year, and apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Myoporum laetum Care Tips

Ngaio is a low-maintenance plant that is ideal for tough conditions. Water young trees regularly during dry spells to help establish strong roots. Once established, it tolerates drought, wind, salt spray, and poor soils. Prune lightly to shape or remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid overwatering or planting in heavy, poorly drained soils. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring if needed. Keep an eye out for scale insects, and treat promptly if infestations occur.

Plant Size and Hedge Spacing

Myoporum laetum (Ngaio) can grow up to 8–10 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide as a tree, though it can be maintained at smaller sizes with pruning. For hedging or shelterbelts, space plants 1.5 to 2 metres apart. This allows them to fill in quickly while maintaining good airflow. Regular trimming will encourage dense, bushy growth and keep the hedge tidy and manageable.
