Michelia alba (White Champaca)

Michelia alba, commonly known as White Champaca, is a highly fragrant, evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. It features creamy white, orchid-like flowers that bloom from mid-spring through autumn, filling the air with an intoxicating scent. With its lush, mid-green foliage and upright growth habit, Michelia alba reaches heights of 6–10 metres and spreads 2–4 metres wide, making it an excellent choice for specimen planting, hedging, or inclusion around outdoor living areas in New Zealand gardens. Thriving in full sun and well-drained, sheltered sites, this low-maintenance tree adds year-round beauty and fragrance to any landscape.

How to grow a Michelia alba hedge

The Michelia alba hedge spacing is generally 50 cm between the plants. If you want the hedge to fill in more quickly, you can reduce the spacing to 40 cm. However, going wider than 50 cm will have two effects. The first is that the gap between the plants at the base will be harder to fill in, and this can cause frustration. The second is that the plants will tend to grow wider rather than upward. At a closer spacing, the plants compete for light, and in doing so, they push each other upwards. Therefore, The Plant Company recommends a spacing of 40-50 cm to achieve an impressive hedge. If large-grade plants (25L pot size or more) are purchased, the spacing can be increased to 1 m apart, as the plants have already been manicured to be bushy. Start trimming the sides of the hedge once active growth starts to achieve a denser hedge.

Michelia alba care tips

Michelia alba, also known as White Champaca or White Sandalwood, thrives in a warm, sheltered position with full sun to part shade and well-drained, fertile soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry periods. Apply mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, making sure to avoid direct contact with the trunk. Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. Prune the tree lightly after flowering to maintain its shape. Protect from frost and cold winds, particularly when young.

When is the best time for planting Michelia alba?

The best time to plant Michelia alba is during the dormant season, which typically spans from late autumn to early spring. However, the optimal timing within this period is spring, as the warming soil encourages better root establishment. This allows the young tree to settle in well before the heat of summer arrives. You can still plant in summer, provided careful attention is paid to watering.
