Metrosideros umbellata, commonly known as Southern Rata, is a NZ native tree that grows to about 15 m tall and 3 m wide. It is slow-growing and produces small, dark-green leaves. The attraction of this tree are the brilliant red flowers in summer as the tree matures. Best performance with this Southern Rata tree is achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of poor soils, dry periods, frost once established, and coastal climates. This Pohutukawa is an excellent choice for coastal gardens, adding to a mixed planting in a large garden, or growing as a specimen.
