Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’

Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ is a compact and highly floriferous New Zealand native pohutukawa cultivar valued for its brilliant red spring flowers and glossy evergreen foliage. Flowering earlier than many other varieties, it brings vibrant colour to NZ gardens at a time when few trees are in bloom. This selection remains smaller and tidier than standard pohutukawa. Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ is hardy, wind tolerant, and ideal for low maintenance landscapes.

How to grow Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ in NZ

Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ grows best in full sun to achieve maximum flowering, though it will tolerate light shade. Plant in free draining soil and choose an open position with good airflow. It performs well across most NZ regions, including coastal areas, and tolerates wind and salt spray once established. Water regularly during the first year to help establish strong roots, then reduce watering once settled.

Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ care tips

Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ is very low maintenance once established. Water during extended dry periods, particularly in the first few summers. Pruning is rarely required but can be done after flowering to maintain shape or size if needed. Feeding is generally unnecessary, though a light application of slow release fertiliser in spring can support growth in poorer soils.

Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ typically grows to around 3 to 4 metres tall and approximately 2 to 3 metres wide. It has a moderate growth rate and forms a dense, rounded canopy. Space plants about 2.5 to 3 metres apart to allow airflow and natural form. Its compact size makes it ideal for urban gardens and smaller planting spaces.

Landscaping uses for Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’

Metrosideros ‘Spring Fire’ is ideal for adding early season colour and year round structure to NZ landscapes. It works well as a small feature tree, informal hedge, or planted along boundaries and streetscapes. The bright red flowers attract birds and pollinators, adding life to the garden. This variety suits coastal gardens, urban settings, and modern landscape designs.
