How to grow Metrosideros ‘Harlequin’ in NZ

Metrosideros ‘Harlequin’ grows best in full sun to light shade, with brighter foliage colour achieved in sunnier positions. Plant in free draining soil and select a site with good airflow. It is well suited to coastal NZ gardens and tolerates wind and salt spray once established. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, then reduce watering as the plant becomes established.

Metrosideros ‘Harlequin’ care tips

Metrosideros ‘Harlequin’ is very low maintenance once established. Water during extended dry periods, especially while young. Pruning is rarely required but can be carried out after flowering or in spring to maintain shape and encourage fresh variegated growth. Feeding is generally unnecessary, though a light application of slow release fertiliser in spring can support growth in poorer soils.

Metrosideros ‘Harlequin’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Metrosideros ‘Harlequin’ typically grows to around 3 to 4 metres tall and approximately 2 to 3 metres wide. It has a moderate growth rate and forms a dense, rounded shrub or small tree. Space plants about 2.5 to 3 metres apart to allow airflow and showcase the foliage. Its compact size suits smaller gardens and urban landscapes.

Landscaping uses for Metrosideros ‘Harlequin’

Metrosideros ‘Harlequin’ is ideal for adding year round foliage interest to NZ landscapes. It works well as a feature shrub, small specimen tree, or planted along boundaries and paths. The variegated foliage contrasts beautifully with darker green plants. This variety suits coastal gardens, courtyards, and modern landscape designs where texture and colour are important.
