Metrosideros excelsa ‘Aurea’ is a rare variety of Pohutukawa that features amazing yellow flowers. This NZ native, evergreen tree carries dark green foliage which becomes adorned with clusters of yellow flowers in summer. It grows with a rounded shape to about 10 m tall and 8 m wide, though can be trimmed as necessary. Metrosideros excelsa ‘Aurea’ prefers a full sun position and a well-drained site that is moderately sheltered but is tolerant of poor soils, dry periods, moderate frost, and coastal environments. It will benefit from wind protection while it establishes. This Pohutukawa is an excellent choice for coastal gardens, growing as a specimen in parks and the like, adding to mixed plantings in large gardens, or using in avenue plantings.
