Metrosideros bartlettii care tips

Metrosideros bartlettii is generally very easy to care for, thriving in New Zealand’s coastal and temperate climates. It prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil, though it can tolerate poor soils, clay, and even rocky ground. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and also highly resistant to salt spray and strong winds, making it ideal for coastal planting. Regular watering is necessary during the first couple of summers to help it establish, but after that, natural rainfall is usually sufficient. Pōhutukawa benefits from an occasional light trim if shaping is needed, preferably after flowering, though mature trees often require little to no pruning. It’s a good idea to mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid piling mulch against the trunk. Feeding is rarely necessary, but a general-purpose fertiliser in spring can encourage lush growth, especially for younger or potted plants.

Plant Size and Spacing

Bartlett’s Rata typically grows 6–10 metres tall and 3–5 metres wide. For planting in a landscape or native restoration, allow at least 3–5 metres between trees to accommodate their natural spread and allow air circulation.

What is the Metrosideros bartlettii growth rate?

Metrosideros bartlettii has a slow to moderate growth rate, typically adding about 20–40 cm per year under good conditions. It is slower-growing than many other Metrosideros species. Over time, it can reach heights of 8–15 metres, but this takes many years to achieve. Growth is best in full sun to partial shade, with well-drained, fertile soil and consistent moisture, especially while young. It is essential to shelter young plants from strong winds and heavy frost, as they can further slow their growth.
