Meryta sinclairii ‘Moonlight’, commonly known as the Variegated Puka, is a fantastic NZ native shrub due to its tropical appearance. It bears large and bold, variegated leaves and will grow quickly to 5 m tall and 4 m wide. This Puka can be trimmed to keep it smaller, which encourages a flush of new growth. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. It will tolerate coastal conditions and short periods of dry but does require frost protection. Meryta ‘Moonlight’ is a great plant for coastal and tropical gardens and is also commonly used as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is perfect for planting around pool and barbecue areas, or growing to border an entrance.
