Meryta sinclairii, commonly known as Puka, this is a NZ native shrub with a lush and tropical appearance. It bears large and glossy, dark green leaves which are held densely off spreading stems. It grows quickly to about 5 m tall and 4 m wide and responds well to trimming which encourages fresh, new growth. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. It will tolerate coastal conditions and short periods of dry but does require frost protection. Puka are great plants for coastal and tropical gardens and is also commonly used as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is also well suited to being used for screening or planted around pool or barbecue areas. Often the smaller plants of Meryta sinclairii are grown as a potted plant indoors for 2-3 years (or more) before being moved into the garden. They are a great alternative to the Fiddle Leaf Fig.
