Growing Melicytus ramiflorus Successfully in NZ

Melicytus ramiflorus (Mahoe, Whiteywood) is easy to grow and well-suited to most parts of New Zealand. It thrives in full sun to full shade and grows well in a variety of soils, including clay and loam. While it prefers moist, well-drained soil, it tolerates dry periods once established. Fast-growing and hardy, Mahoe is ideal for creating shelter, quick cover, or restoring native habitats. It also copes well with pruning and urban conditions.

Melicytus ramiflorus Care Tips

Water regularly during the first year to help Mahoe establish, especially in dry conditions. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Prune to shape or remove any dead or crossing branches as needed. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring if growth is slow. Mahoe thrives in both sun and shade and is naturally pest-resistant, making it a reliable choice for low-effort native planting.

Plant Size and Spacing

Melicytus ramiflorus typically grows 5–10 metres tall and 3–4 metres wide. For shelterbelts or native revegetation, space plants 2 to 3 metres apart. In garden settings or as a feature tree, allow at least 3 metres of space to accommodate its natural spread and encourage healthy growth.
