Melicytus lanceolatus is a small, fast growing, NZ native tree with an open growth habit. The bark is white. It features green foliage that is spear shaped and are often curved down towards the tip. Purple flowers appear from winter through summer on male plants while female plants bear yellow flowers. Female flowers turn into dark purple berries which are great for attract birds. It typically grows to 8 m or more tall and 6 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and periods of dry. This plant is commonly used as a specimen in a larger garden, in coastal plantings, for shelter, or for screening.
