Commonly known as Wharangi, this is a small, NZ native tree grown for its lovely foliage. This evergreen bears glossy, lime-green leaves which release a pleasant scent when crushed. Clusters of small and scented, cream coloured flowers are borne in summer and result in black fruits which are great for attracting birds. It grows densely with a rounded habit to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of dry periods, heavy and poor soils, and light frost once established. Wharangi is perfect for brightening up a garden and attracting birds. It is often used to provide shelter and screening, planted as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in revegetation projects, or simply included in a mixed planting.
