How to grow Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata "Waterlily")
“Waterlily” is an outstanding variety of Magnolia due to its spectacular flowering and compact growth habit. Masses of mildly fragrant, white, lily like flowers are borne in spring before the foliage emerges. The crisp, dark green foliage emerges and adds further appeal to this plant. As autumn progresses the leaves develop colourful yellow tones before falling. It grows with a rounded shape to about 4 m tall and 2.5 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Waterlily” is commonly grown as a small specimen tree, added to a mixed planting, included in a “white” garden, or planted as a cluster for a stunning display. It is also suited to avenue planting or for planting to border an entrance. The beauty of this tree will please no matter where it is planted.
