Magnolia stellata (Star Magnolia)

5 from 1 customers

Magnolia stellata, commonly known as the Star Magnolia or Starry Magnolia, features dark pink flower buds that open in spring to reveal star-shaped, white flowers. The fragrant blooms appear just before the lush, green leaves emerge. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same width, and can be trimmed as necessary. Magnolia stellata is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, included in a “white” garden, or planted in clusters for a stunning display.

How to grow Magnolia stellata (Star Magnolia) in NZ

To grow Magnolia stellata successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Enrich the soil with compost before planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water the plant regularly during dry periods, especially while it is establishing. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring after flowering. Plant in a sheltered location to protect flower buds from strong winds and late frosts. Prune only to maintain shape or remove damaged branches.

Magnolia stellata care tips

Mulch annually to keep the soil cool and moist and to suppress weeds. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first few years. Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. Prune only after flowering to remove dead or crossing branches. Protect flower buds from late frosts and strong winds, and avoid disturbing the roots as this magnolia prefers to stay undisturbed once established.

Magnolia stellata height, growth rate, and hedge spacing

Magnolia stellata is a compact, slow-growing deciduous tree or large shrub that typically reaches 2-3 metres in height and width. Its growth rate is slow to moderate, making it ideal for small gardens and confined spaces. While not commonly used as a formal hedge, it can be planted in groups for a flowering screen. For grouped planting, space plants about 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for natural spread and airflow.
