Magnolia 'King Rose'

How to grow the Magnolia 'King Rose' tree in NZ

To grow Magnolia 'King Rose' successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny or partially shaded site with well drained, slightly acidic soil. Add compost or organic matter when planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the tree is establishing. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring after flowering. Plant in a sheltered position to protect the early buds from frost and strong wind. Minimal pruning is required.

Magnolia 'King Rose' care tips

Mulch around the base each year to keep the soil cool and moist, and to suppress weeds. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while the tree is young. Feed in early spring with a slow release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Prune only to remove damaged or crossing branches after flowering. Protect flower buds from strong wind and late frosts. Avoid disturbing the roots, as magnolias prefer to be left undisturbed once established.

Magnolia 'King Rose' size, spacing, and growth rate

Magnolia 'King Rose' typically reaches about 2.5 m tall and 2.5 m wide in suitable conditions. Allow about 2.5 m between centres for separate specimens, leaving room for mature foliage and good airflow. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Use the mature spread as a guide when planting beside paths, walls, or neighbouring plants. Containers can limit overall size, so choose a pot that supports healthy root development. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust surrounding planting as needed.

Landscaping uses for Magnolia 'King Rose'

Use Magnolia 'King Rose' for specimen planting, spacious gardens, and landscape focal points. Position it where its natural form can be appreciated and allow sufficient space for mature growth.
