How to grow Magnolia 'Star Wars' in NZ

Magnolia 'Star Wars' grows best in New Zealand when planted in full sun or light shade with shelter from strong winds. Select a site with well-drained, slightly acidic soil that is enriched with organic matter. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first few years, to help establish strong roots. Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it away from the trunk. Prune lightly after flowering if shaping is needed. Avoid planting in waterlogged or compacted soils.

Magnolia 'Star Wars' care tips

Magnolia 'Star Wars' prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Water deeply during dry spells, particularly when the plant is young. Apply mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weed growth, keeping it clear of the trunk. Feed annually in spring with a slow-release fertiliser. Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches after the flowers have bloomed. Protect from strong winds and late frosts, which can damage flower buds. This tree is generally low maintenance once established.

Magnolia 'Star Wars' height, spacing, and growth rate

Magnolia 'Star Wars' typically grows to 4 to 6 metres tall and 3 to 4 metres wide with an upright and spreading crown. It has a moderate growth rate, generally adding 30 to 60 cm of height per year under ideal conditions. For best results, space plants about 3 to 4 metres apart to allow room for their mature width and canopy spread. This makes it well suited as a feature tree in medium to large gardens.
