Magnolia soulangeana 'Alba'

Magnolia soulangeana 'Alba' landscape uses

Magnolia soulangeana 'Alba' is an ideal choice as a striking feature tree in lawns, courtyards, or large garden beds, thanks to its elegant, white, tulip-shaped flowers that bloom in early spring. Its upright, spreading form also makes it suitable for screening or softening built structures in both formal and informal landscapes. It pairs beautifully with underplantings of bulbs or low-growing evergreens, providing seasonal drama and year-round structure to New Zealand gardens.

How to grow Magnolia soulangeana 'Alba' in NZ

To grow Magnolia soulangeana 'Alba' in New Zealand, plant it in a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained, fertile soil. Choose a sheltered position to protect its early spring blooms from wind. Water regularly during the first year, then only during extended dry periods. Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Minimal pruning is required—remove damaged or crossing branches after flowering.

Magnolia soulangeana 'Alba' size, spacing, and growth rate

Magnolia soulangeana 'Alba' typically reaches about 8 m tall and 5 m wide in suitable conditions. Allow about 5 m between centres for separate specimens, leaving room for mature foliage and good airflow. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Use the mature spread as a guide when planting beside paths, walls, or neighbouring plants. Containers can limit overall size, so choose a pot that supports healthy root development. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust surrounding planting as needed.
