Magnolia 'Milky Way'

How to grow the Magnolia 'Milky Way' tree in NZ

To grow Magnolia 'Milky Way' successfully in New Zealand, plant it in full sun or part shade with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Select a sheltered spot protected from strong winds and late frosts, as these can damage flower buds. Enrich the soil with compost at planting and apply mulch each year to retain moisture. Water the tree regularly during dry periods, especially while it is establishing. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring after flowering. Prune only to maintain shape or remove damaged branches.

Magnolia Magnolia 'Milky Way' care tips

Mulch yearly to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and protect shallow roots. Water deeply during dry spells, particularly while the tree is establishing. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support strong growth and flowering. Prune only after flowering to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Protect young trees from strong winds and late frosts, which can damage developing buds. Avoid disturbing the roots, as magnolias prefer to remain undisturbed once planted.

Magnolia 'Milky Way' size, spacing, and growth rate

Magnolia 'Milky Way' typically reaches about 6 m tall and 4 m wide in suitable conditions. Allow about 4 m between centres for separate specimens, leaving room for mature foliage and good airflow. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Use the mature spread as a guide when planting beside paths, walls, or neighbouring plants. Containers can limit overall size, so choose a pot that supports healthy root development. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust surrounding planting as needed.

Landscaping uses for Magnolia 'Milky Way'

Use Magnolia 'Milky Way' for specimen planting, spacious gardens, and landscape focal points. Position it where its natural form can be appreciated and allow sufficient space for mature growth.
