How to grow Magnolia grandiflora in NZ

Magnolia grandiflora grows best in New Zealand when planted in full sun with protection from strong winds. Select a site with well-drained, slightly acidic soil that is enriched with organic matter. Water regularly during the first few years to establish strong roots, then reduce watering as it becomes drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it clear of the trunk. Prune lightly after flowering to shape if needed. Avoid wet or compacted soils.

Magnolia grandiflora (Sothern Magnolia) care tips

Magnolia grandiflora prefers full sun and sheltered conditions with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Water deeply during dry periods, especially while young, but avoid overwatering. Apply mulch to keep roots cool and moist, and feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Prune lightly to remove dead or crossing branches after flowering. Protect from strong winds, which can damage the large leaves. Staking young trees is recommended. This tree is hardy and low-maintenance once established.

Magnolia grandiflora height, spacing, and growth rate

Magnolia grandiflora is a slow to moderate growing evergreen tree that can reach 15 to 20 metres tall and 6 to 8 metres wide at maturity. It has a dense, upright growth habit with a broad pyramidal shape. For optimal spacing, allow at least 6 to 8 metres between trees to accommodate their mature width. Growth typically ranges from 30 to 60 cm per year under ideal conditions, making it a long-lived and stately choice for larger gardens or landscape features.
