Magnolia 'Genie'

How to grow the 'Genie' Magnolia tree in NZ

To grow Magnolia 'Genie' successfully in New Zealand, plant it in a sunny or partially shaded spot with shelter from strong winds. Select a well-drained, slightly acidic soil that is enriched with compost or organic matter. Water the tree regularly during dry periods, especially while it is establishing. Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk. Prune lightly after flowering if shaping is needed. Avoid waterlogged or compacted soils for best results.

Magnolia 'Genie' care tips

Magnolia 'Genie' prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Water deeply during dry periods, particularly in the first few years. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, but keep it clear of the trunk. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Prune only to remove dead or crossing branches after flowering. This variety is low maintenance and ideal for smaller New Zealand gardens.

Magnolia 'Genie' height, growth rate, and spacing

Magnolia 'Genie' is a compact, upright tree that grows to around 3 to 4 metres tall and 2 to 3 metres wide. It has a moderate growth rate, typically gaining 30 to 40 cm in height per year under ideal conditions. For best results, space plants about 2.5 to 3 metres apart to allow room for their mature spread. Its smaller size makes it perfect for urban gardens, borders, or as a smaller specimen tree.

Landscaping uses for Magnolia 'Genie'

Use Magnolia 'Genie' for specimen planting, spacious gardens, and landscape focal points. Position it where its natural form can be appreciated and allow sufficient space for mature growth. Combine it with plants that enjoy similar light, soil, and watering conditions for a practical and cohesive display. Repeated planting adds rhythm, while a single specimen can create a distinctive focal point. Place it near contrasting foliage so its shape stands out clearly in the planting.
