“Genie” is an outstanding variety of Magnolia due to its spectacular flowering and narrow form. It bears masses of mildly fragrant, deep red-purple flowers in spring. The flowers are borne on the naked stems before the foliage emerges, providing for both a dramatic and colourful display. The lush foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to become a darker green, then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a narrow habit to about 5 m tall and 2 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. This tree grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry. “Genie” makes for a fantastic specimen and is commonly included in a mixed planting, or planted to border an entrance. The beauty of this tree will please no matter where it is used.
