Magnolia 'Felix'

How to grow the Magnolia 'Felix' tree in NZ

To grow Magnolia 'Felix' successfully in New Zealand, plant it in full sun or part shade in fertile, well drained soil with a slightly acidic pH. Choose a sheltered spot protected from strong winds to preserve the large spring flowers. Add compost when planting and mulch annually to retain soil moisture. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while establishing. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring after flowering. Prune only to remove dead or crossing branches, ideally after blooming.

Magnolia 'Felix' care tips

Mulch around the base each year to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water deeply during dry spells, especially while the tree is establishing. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring after flowering to support healthy growth and bud development. Avoid heavy pruning. Lightly shape or remove dead or crossing branches after flowering. Protect young plants from strong wind and late frosts, which can damage the early flower buds. Keep the area around the base weed free.

Magnolia 'Felix' height, growth rate, and hedge spacing

Magnolia 'Felix' grows to a height of around 5 to 6 metres and a width of 3.5 to 4 metres. It has a moderate to fast growth rate under ideal conditions. This variety is best used as a feature tree rather than for hedging due to its upright, pyramidal form and large size. If planting in a row for screening, allow at least 3 to 4 metres between trees to give them sufficient space to develop fully and showcase their flowers.

Landscaping uses for Magnolia 'Felix'

Use Magnolia 'Felix' for specimen planting, spacious gardens, and landscape focal points. Position it where its natural form can be appreciated and allow sufficient space for mature growth. Combine it with plants that enjoy similar light, soil, and watering conditions for a practical and cohesive display. Repeated planting adds rhythm, while a single specimen can create a distinctive focal point. Place it near contrasting foliage so its shape stands out clearly in the planting.
