How to grow the Magnolia 'Fairy White' tree in NZ

To grow Magnolia 'Fairy White' successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny or partially shaded position with well-drained, fertile soil. Add compost to enrich the soil before planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, then only during dry periods once established. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support growth and flowering. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove any damaged branches.

Magnolia 'Fairy White' care tips

Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Water deeply during dry periods, especially while the plant is establishing. Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant and remove any damaged or crossing branches. Protect flower buds from late frosts where possible, and check occasionally for pests such as scale or thrips.

Magnolia 'Fairy White' height, growth rate, and hedge spacing

Magnolia 'Fairy White' grows to approximately 3 metres in height and 2 metres in width, with a moderate growth rate. It typically reaches its mature size within 5 to 7 years in good conditions. For hedging or screening purposes, space plants about 1 to 1.2 metres apart. This spacing encourages a dense, lush hedge while allowing enough room for airflow and healthy growth. Light pruning will help maintain a tidy, compact shape.
