How to grow the Magnolia 'Fairy Blush' tree in NZ

To grow Magnolia 'Fairy Blush' successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with fertile, well-drained soil. This variety prefers slightly acidic conditions and benefits from organic matter worked into the planting hole. Water regularly during the first year to help establish a strong root system, then reduce watering as it becomes drought-tolerant. Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Protect young plants from harsh frosts, and feed annually with a slow-release fertiliser in spring.

Magnolia 'Fairy Blush' care tips

Mulch annually to keep roots cool and moist, especially during dry summers. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape if needed, though it naturally forms a neat habit. Avoid heavy pruning, as it may reduce the number of flowers next season. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Check for pests such as scale or thrips periodically. Water deeply during prolonged dry periods, particularly while young or in exposed locations.

Magnolia 'Fairy Blush' height, growth rate, and hedge spacing

Magnolia 'Fairy Blush' grows to around 3–4 metres tall and 1.5–2 metres wide. It has a moderate growth rate, typically reaching its mature height over 5–7 years. For hedging or grouped plantings, space plants approximately 1 to 1.5 metres apart. In open landscapes, allow at least 2 metres of space to showcase its natural, bushy form. Regular watering during establishment will help promote steady growth.
