“Deryk” is an impressive variety of Magnolia due to its colourful flowers and tidy form. It bears masses of large and showy, dark red-purple flowers from late winter until early spring. The flowers are borne on the naked stems before the foliage emerges. The lush foliage is dark green and takes on yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a narrow and upright habit to about 4 m tall and 2.5 m wide and can easily be contained with trimming. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Deryk” is commonly grown as a specimen, included in a mixed planting, added to a cottage garden, used in avenue plantings, or grown as a backdrop for smaller plants.
