“Burgundy Star” is an outstanding variety of Magnolia due to its spectacular flowering. It bears masses of fragrant, burgundy red flowers through late winter and early spring which are borne on the naked stems before the foliage emerges. The lush foliage emerges soon after and is dark green and takes on yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a somewhat narrow and upright habit to about 6 m tall and 2.5 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Burgundy Star” is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, included in cottage gardens, or trimmed into a hedge. The beauty of this tree will please no matter where it is planted.
