How to grow the 'Atlas' Magnolia tree

Magnolia ‘Atlas’ thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil enriched with organic matter. Choose a sheltered site protected from strong winds and late frosts to preserve its large spring flowers. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while the tree is establishing. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk. Prune only to remove dead or crossing branches after flowering.

Size, growth rate, and tree spacing

Magnolia ‘Atlas’ is a vigorous, medium-to-large deciduous tree that typically grows 10–12 m tall and 6–8 m wide at maturity. It has a moderate growth rate, increasing 30–60 cm per year under ideal conditions. When planting, allow at least 6–8 m of spacing from other trees or structures to accommodate its wide canopy and ensure good airflow. This generous spacing also allows its spectacular blooms to be fully appreciated in the landscape.
