How to grow the Magnolia 'Athene' tree in NZ

To grow Magnolia 'Athene' successfully in New Zealand, plant it in full sun or light shade with shelter from strong winds. Choose a well drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the tree is young, to establish strong roots. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk. Prune lightly after flowering if shaping is needed, and protect buds from late frosts.

Magnolia 'Athene' care tips

Magnolia 'Athene' prefers full sun to light shade and well drained, slightly acidic soil. Water deeply during dry periods, especially while the tree is establishing. Apply mulch annually to help retain soil moisture and reduce weed growth, keeping it clear of the trunk. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowering. Prune lightly after flowering to remove any dead or crossing branches. Protect from strong winds and late frosts, which can damage flower buds.

Magnolia 'Athene' height, growth rate, and spacing

Magnolia 'Athene' typically grows to 4 to 5 metres tall and 3 to 4 metres wide, forming an upright, rounded shape. It has a moderate growth rate, usually gaining 30 to 50 cm in height per year under ideal conditions. For best results, space trees about 3 to 4 metres apart to accommodate their mature spread. This makes Magnolia 'Athene' well suited as a feature tree in small to medium-sized New Zealand gardens.
