Litsea calicaris, commonly known as mangeao, is an evergreen tree native to the North Island of New Zealand. It grows up to 15 metres tall and features glossy, wavy-edged leaves and small yellowish flowers in spring. In summer, it produces purple-black fruit that attract native birds. Mangeao thrives in moist, well-drained soils, particularly on limestone or clay, and prefers sheltered, shaded forest environments. Ideal for native revegetation projects, it also has historical value for its strong, flexible timber.
