Liquidambar styraciflua Worplesdon, commonly known as the Worplesdon Sweet Gum, is a popular variety due to its brilliant autumn colours and impressive form. It bears star-shaped leaves which emerge a rich, dark green in spring. As autumn progresses the leaves turn golden yellow and develop vibrant orange, red, and purple colourings before falling. Small, green flowers appear in summer through autumn and result in hard, spiked fruits. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 6 m wide with an upright, pyramidal growth habit and performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is hardy to frost, cool climates, and some wind but should be protected from strong winds while establishing. Liquidambar Worplesdon makes for a lovely specimen and is great for avenue planting, planting in clusters, or planting anywhere a spectacular autumn display is desired.
