Commonly called Sweetgum, this is a popular ornamental tree due to its brilliant autumn colours. It features star-shaped leaves which emerge a rich green, darken with age, then develop a myriad of orange, red, and purple in autumn before falling. Small, green flowers appear in summer through autumn and result in hard, spiked fruits. It typically grows to 10 m tall and 8 m wide with an upright and broad growth habit. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is hardy to frost, cool climates, and moderate wind but should be protected establishing. This Liquidambar makes for a lovely specimen and is great for avenue planting, growing for shade, or planting anywhere the spectacular autumn display can be enjoyed.
