Liquidambar acalycina, commonly known as the Sweet Gum tree, is grown for its form and fantastic autumn colours. This popular ornamental tree features leaves that emerge burgundy red in spring, mature to dark green, then turn a myriad of red, purple, and orange in autumn before falling. The autumn display is magnificent. It grows with a pyramidal shape to about 15 m tall and 8 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. This Sweet Gum tree grows best when positioned in full sun on a well-drained, moderately sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. This Liquidambar makes a fantastic specimen in a park or large garden.
