Bay Tree, Bay Leaf Tree, Sweet Bay Tree

Laurus nobilis, commonly known as Laurel or Bay Tree, is an evergreen tree that features leaves that are glossy green, aromatic, and somewhat leathery in appearance. Flowers produced in spring are pale yellow, borne in clusters, and result in small, glossy, black berries. It typically grows to 12 m tall and 8 m wide but is often trimmed to much smaller sizes. Laurus nobilis is a great tree for hedging, topiary, and screening, using as a backdrop for other plants, or growing as a specimen. The leaves on this Laurel are the well-known, Bay Leaves, and can be used fresh or dry in cooking to add a fragrant flavour to dishes.

What are the garden uses for Laurus nobilis in NZ?

Laurus nobilis is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is most commonly grown as specimen, used as a hedge (both trimmed and untrimmed), added to a mixed planting, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is a great complement to a modern or cottage garden, bringing both formality and elegance to a space. Bay trees are also popular plants for growing in pots and their evergreen nature and somewhat slower growth habit makes them ideal for pool gardens. Little wonder Laurus nobilis is so popular in NZ gardens!

Laurus nobilis care

Caring for Laurus nobilis is simply about getting a few easy things right so the plant thrives. they prefer a sheltered spot in either full sun or part shade. A well-drained and fertile soil is crucial for success. Adding organic matter like compost into the soil during planting will help with soil fertility. They prefer a moist soil so consistent watering is essential, especially during dry periods but be careful to avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. Applying tree fertiliser in spring will keep the plants well-fed for the year. Any trimming should be undertaken in autumn or early spring which is mostly about shaping the tree. Applying mulch around the base of the plant helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. The Plant Company recommends trees are staked to give them that extra bit of support. Monitor for pests like scale insect and diseases like powdery mildew and treat as needed with an appropriate agrichemical if you think it is needed.

Can Laurus nobilis grow in shade?

How well Laurus nobilis performs in shade depends on the level of shade. They will happily grow in conditions where they receive only 3-4 hours of direct sun per day or a large amount of dappled sunlight. However, if light conditions are less than this, the growth tends to become less dense, leaf yellowing can begin, and growth may slow to a near stop. Certainly their preference is to grow in full-sun positions.

Does Laurus nobilis have edible leaves?

The leaves on the Laurus nobilis tree are certainly edible. This is the most widely used variety in the world for providing ‘Bay Leaves’ for culinary dishes.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Laurus nobilis (Bay Tree)? We are here to help.

Is this tree bug-free? I bought one tree in another store and it has lots of scale insects on it.

They can get scale insect from time to time but our plants are free of this pest when we send them out. They are treated with an insecticide at any sign of them which is somewhat rare for this particular species.
