Commonly known as Laurel or Bay Tree, this is an evergreen tree that features attractive foliage, flowers, and berries. The leaves are glossy green, aromatic, and somewhat leathery in appearance. Flowers produced in spring are pale yellow, borne in clusters, and result in small, glossy, black berries. It typically grows to 12 m tall and 8 m wide but is often trimmed to much smaller sizes. This Laurel grows best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun. It is tolerant of frosts, moderate wind, and dry periods but should be protected while it is establishing. This is a great tree for hedging, topiary, and screening, using as a backdrop for other plants, or growing as a specimen. The leaves on this Laurel are the well-known, Bay Leaves, and can be used fresh or dry in cooking to add a fragrant flavour to dishes.
