Growing Kunzea ericoides Successfully in NZ

Kunzea ericoides, commonly known as Kanuka, is a hardy and fast-growing New Zealand native ideal for shelter, revegetation, and native gardens. It thrives in full sun and a wide range of soil types, including those that are poor or dry. Kanuka tolerates wind, frost, and drought once established, making it highly adaptable. Its delicate foliage and white summer flowers attract native insects and birds. Use it for erosion control, screening, or as part of a native planting scheme.

Kunzea ericoides Care Tips

Plant Kunzea ericoides (Kanuka) in full sun with well-drained soil. It’s highly adaptable and thrives in poor, dry, or exposed sites. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, then only in prolonged periods of dryness. Mulch to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Minimal pruning is required, but light trimming after flowering can be used to maintain the desired shape. This hardy, low-maintenance native is frost- and wind-tolerant, and generally free from pests and diseases.

Plant Size and Spacing

Kunzea ericoides typically grows 5–10 metres tall and 3–5 metres wide, forming an upright, bushy tree. For shelterbelts or revegetation, space plants 2–3 metres apart to create dense coverage. For individual specimen planting, allow 3–5 metres between trees to accommodate mature spread and airflow. This spacing supports healthy growth and effective habitat creation in native or low-maintenance landscapes.
