Kauri Tree

The Kauri tree (Agathis australis) is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and ancient native trees. Renowned for its immense size, straight trunk, and longevity, it can live for over 1,000 years. Mature trees develop massive girths and broad canopies, making them a majestic feature in forests. Kauri prefer well-drained soils and warm climates, and while slow-growing, they are incredibly resilient. These trees are culturally significant to Māori and play a vital role in native ecosystems.

How to grow a Kauri Tree

Kauri trees thrive in warm, frost-free areas with well-drained, acidic soils. Select a sunny, sheltered site away from structures, as these trees can grow to a considerable size over time. Dig a generous hole and backfill with loose soil to aid root establishment. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while young, but avoid waterlogging. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Kauri trees grow slowly but reward patience with grandeur and longevity.

How hardy are Kauri trees?

Kauri trees are moderately hardy in New Zealand's warmer regions but are sensitive to frost when young. They thrive best in coastal and lowland areas north of Auckland, where winters are mild and soils are free-draining. Mature trees can tolerate dry periods and wind once established, but they are vulnerable to root disturbance and poor drainage. In colder or wetter areas, their growth may be stunted or they may fail to thrive altogether.
