The flowers emerge a cream colour, age to yellow-orange, and are great for attracting birds and insects. They are followed by long pear-shaped seed capsules. It features glossy, dark green leaves which are held on widely spaced branches which is very aesthetic. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. Young trees should be protected from frost until they are about 2 m tall. Hymenosporum flavum is commonly used for avenue planting, added to a mixed planting, planted in clusters, used to border an entranceway, or grown as a specimen.
