Growing Hoheria sextylosa Successfully in NZ

Hoheria sextylosa, also known as Houhere or Long-leaved Lacebark, is a beautiful NZ native tree ideal for gardens, shelterbelts, and revegetation. It grows best in full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. This fast-growing, evergreen tree produces masses of white, starry flowers in summer and responds well to trimming. It tolerates wind and light frost, making it suitable for most regions in New Zealand. Perfect for adding height, shelter, and seasonal interest.

Hoheria sextylosa Care Tips

Plant Hoheria sextylosa in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment, then only in extended periods of dryness. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune after flowering to shape the tree and encourage dense growth, especially if used as a screen or shelter. It tolerates light frost and wind, and is generally resistant to pests and diseases. Fertilise in spring with a slow-release fertiliser if needed. Overall, this is a low-maintenance tree.

Plant Size and Spacing

Hoheria sextylosa typically grows 5–10 metres tall and 3–5 metres wide, forming an upright, columnar to rounded shape. When planting, space trees about 3–5 metres apart to accommodate their mature spread and ensure good airflow. This spacing is ideal for shelter planting, native groves, or as specimen trees in larger gardens. For hedging or screening, closer spacing (around 2.5–3 metres) can be used to encourage denser growth.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Hoheria sextylosa (Lacebark)? We are here to help.

Hi there! I bought a Hoheria sextylosa and received it a couple of weeks ago. I've found that the location I was going to plant it in is not suitable (found a pipe underground) so I was wondering if this tree can be successfully grown in a container instead? Cheers Maria

Hi, it will grow fine in a container. Be sure to use growing media and not soil, and use fertiliser tablets rather than garden fertiliser.
