Hoheria glabrata (Mountain Ribbonwood)

Lacebark Tree, Mountain Ribbonwood

Hoheria glabrata, commonly known as Mountain Ribbonwood or Lacebark Tree, is an attractive, deciduous tree growing to about 10 m and 3 m wide. The oval leaves are bright green with a serrated edge and develop attractive, yellow-red tones in autumn before falling. Fragrant, white flowers are produced in summer and literally cover the tree. Hoheria glabrata is an ideal tree for mixed plantings, as a quick growing shelter plant, riparian planting, or treating as a specimen in a medium to large sized garden.

How to grow Hoheria glabrata in NZ

Hoheria glabrata grows best in NZ when planted in full sun or partial shade with well drained soil. It will tolerate a wide range of soil types, including clay and loam, provided drainage is adequate. Plant during autumn or spring to allow the roots to establish before summer. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. With the right conditions, Mountain Ribbonwood will establish quickly and reward with vigorous growth and abundant seasonal flowers.

Hoheria glabrata care tips

Caring for Hoheria glabrata is straightforward and low maintenance. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and prolific blooms. Water regularly during dry periods while young, though mature trees are relatively drought tolerant. Its resilience and adaptability make it an excellent option for both experienced gardeners and those new to native planting.

Hoheria glabrata size, spacing, and growth rate

Hoheria glabrata typically grows 8–12 m tall and 4–6 m wide at maturity, forming an upright and spreading canopy. Growth is fast under the right conditions, making it a great choice for quickly establishing shelter or adding height to the landscape. Space trees 4–6 m apart when planting in groups or rows to allow sufficient room for development. Its size and fast growth rate make it ideal for lifestyle blocks, larger gardens, or native restoration projects.

Landscaping uses for Hoheria glabrata

Hoheria glabrata is highly valued in NZ landscaping for its seasonal displays and ecological benefits. Its abundant flowers attract pollinators such as bees, while its seeds provide food for native birds. It is well suited as a specimen tree in large gardens, as part of shelterbelt plantings, or in native revegetation projects. The combination of summer flowers, golden autumn foliage, and attractive structure makes it a versatile and rewarding addition to many landscapes.
