Ginkgo biloba Male, commonly known as the Ginkgo Maidenhair Tree, is a deciduous tree grown for its form, foliage, and rich autumn colours. It produces distinctive, fan-shaped, rich green leaves which turn bright yellow in autumn before falling. Ginkgos grow as separate male and female trees and nurseries typically only sell male trees because female trees produce seeds encased in a fleshy covering which tends to be messy and emit a foul odour. It typically grows to 12 m tall and 7 m wide with an upright, rounded habit, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate frost, cool climates, heavy soils, moderate wind, and urban pollution. Ginkgo biloba Male is commonly used in avenue plantings, grown as a specimen, included in a mixed planting, planted around water features such as ponds and streams, or used for bonsai.
