Growing Fuchsia excorticata plants successfully in NZ

Fuchsia excorticata thrives in New Zealand’s cool, moist climate. Plant in part shade with well-drained, fertile soil. Mulch to retain moisture and prune lightly to shape.

Fuchsia excorticata Care Tips

Fuchsia excorticata, or tree fuchsia, thrives in part shade with consistently moist, well-drained soil. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. Protect young plants from harsh winds, and water during dry spells. This hardy native benefits from annual composting or a slow-release fertiliser in spring.

Plant Size and Spacing

Fuchsia excorticata typically grows 3–12 m tall and 3–5 m wide, depending on site conditions. For best results, space plants approximately 2–3 m apart when used in native revegetation or informal hedging. Allow ample room for its broad, spreading form and attractive peeling bark to develop fully in the landscape.
