Fraxinus uhdei, commonly known as the Shamel Ash tree, is a large and stately, deciduous tree. The foliage is lush and dark green but emerges a fresh green colour in spring before darkening. As autumn progresses the leaves develop impressive shades of yellow and orange before falling. Through summer, small, insignificant flowers are produced which result in bunches of winged seeds in autumn. The Shamel Ash tree grows with an upright and spreading habit to about 25 m tall and 15 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It tolerates dry periods, frost, cool climates, coastal conditions, and moderate wind. Fraxinus uhdei makes for a lovely specimen in a park or large garden and will provide great shade. It also makes for a great screen or shelter tree on larger properties.
