Ficus macrophylla (Moreton Bay Fig)

Ficus macrophylla, commonly known as the Moreton Bay Ficus, is a large, evergreen tree that is grown for its foliage and beautiful, buttress roots. It bears dark green, glossy leaves and purple fruits in autumn, which are great for attracting birds. It typically grows to 15 m tall and 10 m wide. The aggressive root system of Ficus macrophylla makes its use limited to extensive gardens only. Old specimens can reach tremendous size, which is why they are widely used as a feature tree in public parks and gardens in warmer climates.

Growing Ficus macrophylla Successfully in NZ

Ficus macrophylla, commonly known as the Moreton Bay Fig, thrives in New Zealand’s warmer regions with mild winters. Plant it in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil with ample space for its expansive root system. This large evergreen tree prefers sheltered sites away from strong winds and grows best with consistent moisture, especially when young. Avoid planting near buildings or drains, as vigorous roots can cause damage. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance. Ideal for parks, extensive gardens, or coastal landscapes.

Ficus macrophylla Care Tips

Plant in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil and allow plenty of space for root spread. Water regularly during the first few years to help establish a deep, strong root system. Mulching around the base of the tree helps to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid planting near structures, pipes, or paved areas, as the roots can become invasive and cause damage. Prune only to remove dead or low-hanging branches.

Plant Size and Spacing

Ficus macrophylla is a massive evergreen tree that can grow 20–30 m tall and spread 15–25 m wide under ideal conditions. Its extensive root system requires generous spacing. Therefore, plant at least 15–20 m away from buildings, drains, driveways, or other trees. This tree is best suited to large open spaces such as parks, farms, or expansive gardens where it can grow unrestricted and develop its full canopy and impressive form.
