Ficus macrophylla

Moreton Bay Fig

Ficus macrophylla is a standout choice for New Zealand gardens. Ficus macrophylla, commonly known as the Moreton Bay Ficus, is a large, evergreen tree that is grown for its foliage and beautiful, buttress roots. It bears dark green, glossy leaves and purple fruits in autumn which are great for attracting birds. It typically grows to 15 m tall and 10 m wide. The aggressive root system of Ficus macrophylla makes its use limited to large gardens only. Old specimens can reach tremendous size hence why it is widely used as a feature tree in public parks and gardens in warmer climates.

Ficus macrophylla grows well in most New Zealand regions. It thrives in well-drained soil with good sunlight and benefits from occasional trimming. Whether grown in containers, borders, or open garden beds, this plant is sure to deliver reliable performance year after year, making it a valuable addition to the home garden.

Ficus macrophylla Care Tips

To keep your Ficus macrophylla looking its best, ensure it is planted in a sunny to partly shaded location with free-draining soil. Water during dry periods and remove spent flowers to encourage ongoing blooming. Fertilise annually with a general-purpose fertiliser to maintain lush growth and colour.

Plant Size and Spacing

Ficus macrophylla typically grows to its mature size within a few seasons. Most varieties reach around 50 cm to 2.5 m tall and wide. Allow enough space for good air circulation—generally spacing plants 50 cm to 1.5 m apart, depending on mature width. Container growing is also suitable for smaller spaces.
