Fagus sylvatica Rohanii is a variety of European Beech tree that features a broad, spreading crown and stunning, purple foliage. The glossy leaves emerge deep purple in spring, age to purple-green in summer, then develop copper tones in autumn before falling. Left untrimmed it will eventually grow to about 12 m tall and 8 m wide, but can be contained with trimming as necessary. Fagus Rohanii grows best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. It is also hardy to moderate wind but will produce a better formed tree if well staked while it establishes. This is a fantastic tree and mature specimens make a dramatic statement in the landscape as their branches sweep to the ground. It is also commonly used for avenue planting, hedging, screening, or added to mixed plantings in large gardens.
