Fagus sylvatica Riversii is a purple Beech tree that features a broad and spreading crown of stunning foliage. The glossy leaves emerge deep purple in spring, age to purple-green in summer, then develop copper tones in autumn before falling. The flowers are small and green, and followed by bristly fruits in autumn. Left untrimmed it will eventually grow to about 18 m tall and 10 m wide, but it can be contained as necessary. Fagus syl Riversii grows best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. It is also hardy to moderate wind but will produce a better formed tree if well staked while it establishes. This is a fantastic shade tree and mature specimens make a dramatic statement in the landscape. It is also commonly used for avenue planting, hedging, screening, or added to mixed plantings in large gardens.
