Fagus sylvatica Purple Fountain Details

The Purple Fountain beech is a variety of European Beech tree that features colourful foliage and weeping branches. The glossy leaves emerge deep purple in spring, age to purple-green in summer, then develop yellow and orange tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a somewhat columnar habit to about 10 m tall and 4 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and periods of dry periods. A better formed tree will result if it is watered and staked while it establishes though. Fagus sylvatica Purple Fountain makes for a fantastic specimen and is also commonly added to a mixed planting or can be maintained in a courtyard garden. It is also well suited to having the branches trained along a wire to give a pleached effect.
