“Dawyck Purple” is a variety of European Beech which is grown for its beautiful colours and slender growth habit. The foliage emerges purple-red in spring, ages to become near black during summer, then develops shades of brown in autumn before falling. It grows with an upright and almost columnar shape to about 12 m tall and 3 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. This variety grows best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and dry periods. It will also tolerate moderate wind, though shelter and staking when young will help produce a better formed tree. This is a fantastic tree and mature specimens make a dramatic statement in the landscape. It is also commonly used for avenue planting, screening, or added to mixed plantings in large gardens.
