How to grow Fagus ‘Dawyck Gold’ in NZ

Fagus ‘Dawyck Gold’ thrives in well drained, fertile soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. It’s tolerant of frost, cool climates, dry periods and moderate wind. In warmer areas a sunny, sheltered site will enhance growth and foliage colour. Given its upright form, it performs beautifully when planted with sufficient vertical space and access to consistent moisture, especially during its early development phase.

Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck Gold’ care tips

Once established, Fagus ‘Dawyck Gold’ is low maintenance. Water regularly during dry spells and apply mulch to retain soil moisture. Light pruning after flowering can refine its shape, but avoid cutting into old wood. A general spring feed will support strong foliage and seasonal colour transitions. Overall, this tree is straightforward to maintain and highly rewarding for its dramatic visual impact.

Fagus ‘Dawyck Gold’ size, spacing, and growth rate

This tree reaches approximately 12 m tall and 3 m wide at maturity. It grows at a moderate to fast rate, typically adding 30–60 cm per year once established.
