Eugenia uniflora Details

Eugenia uniflora, commonly known as the Surinam or Brazilian Cherry, is a small tree grown for its lush foliage and colourful berries. New foliage emerges a bronze colour and ages to become dark green. The somewhat dense foliage is adorned with star-shaped, red fruits during summer. The edible fruits are sweet with a slight bitterness. It typically grows to 6 m tall and 3.5 m wide, but can be trimmed as necessary which also encourages new growth. Best results with Surinam Cherry are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site, though it is tolerant of dry periods, moderate frost, and coastal environments once established. Eugenia uniflora is commonly used for hedging and screening, planted as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, or maintained in a container. As a potted plant it looks impressive on a patio or around pool and other living areas. It is a popular landscape addition with unusual, yet edible fruit!
